Get in touch

Vanda Legal is a boutique Icelandic IP law firm offering specialist trademark and intellectual property services to international clients and their representatives. With nine years working at the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office (ISIPO) — including two years as Head of the IP Department — and further experience as an opposition decision taker at the EUIPO, I bring first-hand knowledge to every matter I handle. Whether you need a reliable correspondent for a single filing, ongoing portfolio management or representation in an IP dispute, I am here to help.

Services

Trademark Prosecution & Registration

I handle trademark applications at the ISIPO and the EUIPO, from filing through registration, advising on goods and services specifications, absolute and relative grounds objections, and examination procedure. I also manage renewals, recordals, and portfolio administration on behalf of foreign rights holders and their agents.

International Registrations & the Madrid System

Iceland is a member of the Madrid System. I act as an Icelandic representative for international registrations designating Iceland and respond to provisional refusals issued by the ISIPO. My background inside the Office provides direct insight into how refusals are assessed and what could be the best way forward to overcome them.

Oppositions, Cancellations & Enforcement

I represent rights holders and applicants before ISIPO and EUIPO in opposition and cancellation proceedings, covering i.e. likelihood of confusion, reputation, bad faith, and non-use. I am also admitted to practice before the Icelandic District Courts, and can handle enforcement, cease and desist correspondence, and civil trademark litigation where administrative proceedings are not sufficient.

EUIPO Proceedings & EEA Strategy

I represent clients directly before the EUIPO in opposition, cancellation, and invalidity proceedings. Having served as an Opposition Decision Taker in the EUIPO's Opposition Division, I bring first-hand knowledge of how the Office reasons through contested cases. As an EEA member, Iceland closely aligns with EU trademark law, and we advise on how EUTM strategy and EU case law interact with Icelandic national rights.

Dagný Fjóla Jóhannsdóttir

Founder

Dagný has over twelve years of specialist IP experience. After working at a small IP firm in Reykjavik, she worked for 9 years at the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office, both as a lawyer and as the Head of the IP Department. For two years she served as an Opposition Decision Taker at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in Spain, where she assessed and decided opposition proceedings. She is qualified to represent clients before the EUIPO and the ISIPO. She holds an ML degree in Law from Reykjavik University and an LLM degree in Technology Law from the University of Edinburgh and is admitted to practise before the Icelandic District Courts.

This combination of experience — inside ISIPO, within the EUIPO's Opposition Division, and in private practice — means she understands Icelandic and EU trademark matters from every angle.
